EUROPA: Albania - Greece




Day 1 : “Mother Teresa” Airport- Tirana
Arrival at Albania. Dinner & Overnight in Tirana.

Day 2 : Tirana-Kruja-Durres
After breakfast in the hotel, depart for the sightseeing tour of Tirana, starting from the
Skanderbeg square. Visit in the National History Museum, E`them Bey Mosque, Clock Tower
etc. Then continue to the main boulevard where are found the different ministries, Academy of
Fine Arts, Main University etc.
After Tirana departure to Kruja medieval town, located on the slope of a mountain. An
old bazaar leads you up to the castle of the National Hero Skanderbeg. Visit in the castle of
the city, housing the Skanderbeg Museum and the Ethnographic museum.
In the afternoon, travel towards Durres, that is also the most important seaport in Albania.
Visit the Amphitheatre, one of the biggest in the Balkan Peninsula (capacity 20.000
spectators) with a rare wall mosaic, which belongs to the 2nd century A.D, etc. Overnight in

Day 3 : Durres- Berat - Vlore
In the morning departure to Berat, known as the “City of one thousand windows” and
declared a Museum City, part of UNESCO heritage site, Berat is an ancient Illyrian settlement
founded in the 4th & 5th centuries B.C. on the territory of the Illyrian tribe of Desarettes. The
town is composed of 3 parts; Gorica, situated on the far side of the river; Mangalem, situated
on the fortress side of the river and. While you approach the centre of the city, the typical
buildings impress you. We will visit the fortress built up on a rocky hill overlooking the town,
Onufri’s Iconographic Museum dedicated to the greates Albanian painter of the XVI century.
As we leave Apollonia, we travel to Vlora coastal city lying in the Southwestern part of
the country. Vlora is one of the major cities of Albania, an important seaport and tourist site.
Overnight in Vlora.

Day 4 : Vlore- Sarande-Butrint
After breakfast, depart to Saranda traveling along the seashore. On the way on is to be
visited the castle of Porto Palermo placed near Himara, also called as the castle of Ali Pashe
Tepelena. The walls of the castle are 1.6m thick. After visiting this castle, the road along the
seashore passes many beautiful villages such as Qeparo, Borsh with large and sunny beaches.
Arrive in Saranda around lunch time.
In the afternoon, we depart to Butrint. A scenic narrow leads you to the ancient city of Butrint.
Visit to the Old Amphitheatre, the Temple of Aesculapius, the Baptistery with colorful mosaics
and the ancient city walls. An old fortress housing a small museum watches over the entire
site, which is one of the last unspoiled natural and ancient historical areas in Mediterranean.
After the visit, back to the town. Overnight in Saranda.

Day 5 : Saranda- Gjirokastra- Ioaninna
After breakfast, as we leave Saranda, we travel towards Gjirokastra, which is a
“Museum City” & UNESCO heritage site. The characteristic houses resemble the towers and
are build one above the other. They have only one common element, the stone. All the homes
have the form of medieval towers. Visit to the castle, which stands out above the city as a
balcony, providing the possibility for visitors to enjoy the beautiful landscape. The castle
houses the National Museum of Weapons, which preserves all the kinds of weapons used and
produced by the Albanians from antiquity.
Afterwards, we proceed to Greece, to the town of Ioannina, the historical and cultural
capital of Epirus, built on the hillside at 500 m above Lake Pamvotis. This town is one of the
most beautiful cities of Greece. Among all the other beauties of Ioannina an outstanding place
holds Lake Pamvotis with its Islet. A village was built on the islet in the 17th century by
refugees from Mani/Peloponnese. There are two monasteries here: St. Nicolas and St.
Panteleimon. St. Nicolas Monastery of Philantropinon, which was built in 1292, is full of
Byzantine hagiographies depicting, for example, the seven philosophers of Ancient Greece. The
cells of the other Monastery of St. Panteleimon exhibits weapons, costumes, jewellery, and
copperplate engravings. Overnight in Ioaninna.

Day 6 : Ioaninna- Metsovo- Meteoras
After breakfast, we will continue to Metsovo, among Greece’s most picturesque small
towns. It extends along one of the highest peaks of the Pindus Mountains, exciting the visitor
with its «Alpine» architecture and its striking scenery. Metsovo’s craftsmen and women keep
alive the traditions of weaving and woodcarving, while the area produces some of the most
delicious cheeses in the country and a wonderful robust red wine.
As we leave Metsovo, we continue our trip to Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Meteora means "suspended in air" which is literally how most see these monasteries, perched
high up on the sheer cliff and mountain faces. This site has been fascinating visitors for
decades. In olden times, there were no stairs and access to these structures, with supplies
winched up to the monks by pulleys and windlasses. The monks would move between the
monasteries using retractable robe ladders. Today, these ancient wonders are still home to
many monks. We will visit two fascinating Byzantinine monasteries perched on gigantic rocks
and etched by time into a fantasy of shapes. Overnight in Kalambaka, town situated in the
shadow of the monasteries.

Day 7 : Kalambaka- Kastoria- Bitola- Ohrid
Depart in the morning for the Macedonian hinderland and the town of Kastoria the
Greek center of fur industry and also famous for its beautiful lake. After the visit of Kastoria
continue driving towards Macedonia. After border procedures, we travel to the town of Bitola.
Here in the vicinity of the city we will visit the site of the ancient Heraclea Lyncestis. In this
city founded by Philip II of Macedonia we will visit the monuments of the Hellenistic, roman
and late antique period. In the afternoon visit of the city of Bitola and its characteristic
architecture of the Scirok Sokak. After the visit, depart for Ohrid, UNESCO world heritage site
Overnight in the city.

Day 8 : Ohrid Sightseeing tour
Morning walking tour (3 hours) in old Ohrid with visit of most famous Ohrid sites –
Church of Mother of God, the Icon gallery, the ancient theatre, Ohrid fortress, new St.
Clement’s church, church of St.John, Kaneo and the main church of St. Sofia. Time at leisure in
old Ohrid or optional lunch. Afternoon departure to St Naum monastery at the south part of
the lake. Visit in the monastery and optional boat ride above the springs of Black Drim river.
Overnight in hotel in Ohrid lake coast.

Day 9 : Ohrid- Struga- Elbasan- Tirana
After breakfast at the hotel, depart to Albania. On the way we will visit the cave church
in Kalishta and the town of Struga. Then continue to Macedonian – Albanian border.
Stop in Elbasan with a some nice remaining of the castle of the town. Have a coffee break
inside a coffee shop inside the wall of the castle. Then continue to Tirana. Overnight in hotel.

Day 15: Tirana- Airport
Transfer to the airport. End of our services
